After the end of the TestaRossa saga, whose 512 TR and M were the last descendants, Ferrari was expected to deliver. Ensuring a worthy successor to its predecessors was not an easy task. Yet, from its presentation, the 550 Maranello won everyone over and achieved unanimous approval, even among the most skeptical die-hards of the Italian firm. A pure work of art to behold, but not only that...
Riding on the momentum of the 456 GT, presented in 1992 and unanimously praised for its highly successful design, Pininfarina drove the point home with the 550 Maranello: sleek, elegant, and racy, it exudes class. Although very wide and featuring an evocative air intake on its aluminum hood, this Ferrari does not intend to be excessive. It is nicknamed the "Squale" (Shark), and looking closely, one understands why. First, thanks to its majestic profile with a long, seemingly endless hood and the air intakes behind the front wheels evoking gills. The design of the taillights is reminiscent of the 456 GT, even if the rear has been somewhat modified (particularly the trunk lid) for improved aerodynamics. This is not the only common point they share, as the Maranello benefits from the same V12, still positioned at the front.
The engine, codenamed F133 and placed longitudinally at the front, is directly derived from the 456 GT/MGT, with the particularity here of being generously supplied with air thanks to the two ducts provided for this purpose. The block develops 43 more horsepower under this new hood, totaling 485 hp, with torque also increasing to a peak of 568 Nm at 5000 rpm.
The Maranello's V12 is coupled to a 6-speed manual gearbox, located at the rear, thus ensuring optimal weight distribution.
The 550 Maranello will be produced until 2002, when it will be replaced by the 575.
The car offered was delivered new in France by the Charles Pozzi dealership in this grigio titanium configuration with a black leather interior.
The car presents very well. It has never been in an accident. The panel gaps are perfect. The interior is in good condition and does not show the common issues of the 550s, as they have already been addressed. A complete detailing will be performed on the car, inside and out.
Mechanically, it functions perfectly.
