Ferrari Dino 246GT 'L-Series'

The Ferrari Dino holds a special place in Ferrari’s history, not only because of its design and engineering but above all due to the emotional story behind it.

It all began with Alfredo "Dino" Ferrari, the son of Enzo Ferrari. Dino was a talented young engineer who, during his studies at the University of Bologna, developed ideas for a compact V6 engine. In the 1950s, he collaborated with Vittorio Jano, one of Ferrari’s great engine builders, on the development of such an engine. Dino believed that a lightweight V6 represented the future for both sports cars and Formula race cars.

Tragically, Dino’s life was cut short. He suffered from muscular dystrophy and passed away in 1956 at the age of just 24. His death was a devastating blow for Enzo Ferrari. Out of respect and in honor of his son, Enzo decided to use the V6 engine Dino had helped design in a series of cars that would carry the name “Dino.”

The first Dinos appeared in motorsport, but in the 1960s Ferrari decided to build a road-going version as well. Since Ferraris were traditionally fitted with large V12 engines and occupied a higher price segment, the Dino was positioned as a slightly more compact and “accessible” Ferrari. Importantly, the early Dinos did not wear the Ferrari badge, but were simply branded as “Dino.” Enzo wanted his son’s name to stand proudly on its own.

The most famous models were the Dino 206 GT and later the 246 GT, launched in 1968 and 1969. Designed by Pininfarina, they featured beautifully flowing bodywork and a mid-engine layout. The Dino 246 GT, powered by its 2.4-liter V6, quickly became an icon: 195 hp, 0–100 km/h in 7.5 seconds, and a top speed of 245 km/h.

Within the 246 GT range, the L-Series (1969–1970) is particularly special, as these were the very first production examples. Only 357 units were built, making it the rarest version. The L-Series retained many details from the earlier 206 GT, such as the center-lock wheels, plexiglass headlamp covers, slim bumpers, and compact taillights. At the same time, it received the more powerful and more durable cast-iron 2.4-liter V6, making it better suited for everyday use. As such, the L-Series represents a unique link between the rare 206 and the later M- and E-Series, and is the most coveted among collectors.

Initially, the Dinos were seen as “not worthy” of Ferrari, since they lacked a V12 and did not carry the Ferrari name. But they were soon praised for their balance, agility, and timeless beauty. Today, the Dino is regarded as one of the most elegant and beloved cars Ferrari ever built and as a moving tribute from a father to his late son.

The story of this car

Nero DS - Christian Abt Restored - 1 of 357

In 2020, this rare Ferrari Dino 246 GT L-Series found its way to Christian Abt Classic. The car was in need of attention, and it was decided to carry out a complete restoration, executed to perfection in every detail.

The body was completely stripped, after which every panel was carefully inspected, repaired, or even remanufactured where necessary. The original plastic components were replaced with finely crafted aluminum parts, elevating the overall quality. The Dino then received a fresh coat of paint in ‘Nero DS’, meticulously sanded and polished to a deep, lustrous finish.

The interior, too, was renewed down to the smallest detail. Everything was reupholstered in ‘Cuoio’ leather, the dashboard was trimmed in the original ‘Mouse Hair’ fabric, and the steering wheel was fully restored.

Technically, the Dino was also given a new lease on life. The 2.4-liter V6 and gearbox were fully rebuilt, with custom-made parts and perfect balancing. The vulnerable water–oil cooler was replaced by a modern air–oil cooler, and the ignition system upgraded to a reliable contactless version. The suspension was lightened and made sportier thanks to Bilstein technology, while the entire braking system was replaced.

After three years of work and €300,000 in restoration costs, the Dino was completed in July 2023. The result: a concours-condition classic, officially inspected and awarded the highest certification score. What once was an example in need of love now drives again as an icon. And not just any icon, but an extremely rare 246 GT L-Series. A shining tribute to craftsmanship and Italian automotive history.

Although the photos give a good impression, we dare say that this Dino looks even more beautiful in person.
