Ferrari 288 GTO for Sale Specs, Performance and Market Value Guide

The Ferrari 288 GTO is one of the most significant cars in Ferrari’s history, marking the beginning of the brand’s legendary hypercar lineage. Developed for Group B racing and powered by a twin-turbo V8, it combines rarity, performance, and historical importance in a way few cars can match.

History

The Ferrari 288 GTO was produced between 1984 and 1985 and holds a pivotal place in Ferrari’s history. It was originally developed for Group B racing, where homologation rules required a minimum of 200 road cars to be built.Ferrari ultimately produced 272 examples, although the model never competed in Group B due to the category’s cancellation.

Based on the Ferrari 308 GTB, the 288 GTO was significantly re-engineered for performance. The designation “GTO” stands for Gran Turismo Omologato, a name previously used on the legendary 250 GTO. The 288 GTO is widely regarded as the starting point of Ferrari’s modern hypercar lineage, followed by models such as the F40, F50, Enzo, and LaFerrari.

Technical Details

The Ferrari 288 GTO is powered by a 2.8-liter twin-turbocharged V8 with a displacement of 2,855 cc and four valves per cylinder. The engine produces 400 hp (294 kW) at 7.000 rpm and 496 Nm of torque at 3,800 rpm. Power is delivered exclusively to the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual gearbox, reinforcing the car’s analogue driving character. The use of turbocharging was a direct response to Group B regulations, resulting in a powertrain that was highly advanced for its time.

Performance

The Ferrari 288 GTO delivers performance that was exceptional at the time of its release and remains impressive today. The Ferrari 288 GTO accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in approximately 4.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of around 305 km/h. It was among the first production cars capable of exceeding 300 km/h, marking a significant milestone in automotive performance.

Dimensions and Weight

The Ferrari 288 GTO measures 4.290 mm in length, 1.910 mm in width, and 1.120 mm in height. Its wider stance compared to the 308 GTB is the result of extended fenders, designed to accommodate a wider track and improved performance. Dry weight is approximately 1.160 kg, with a curb weight of around 1.235 kg.

Design

The design of the Ferrari 288 GTO evolves the proportions of the 308 GTB into a more aggressive and performance-focused form. Wider fenders, large air intakes, and a rear spoiler all serve functional aerodynamic purposes, improving cooling and stability at higher speeds. The body construction incorporates lightweight materials such as carbon fiber, Kevlar, and aluminum, contributing to both reduced weight and increased rigidity.

Interior

The interior of the Ferrari 288 GTO reflects its origins as a homologation special. The cabin is minimalist and focused on the driver, with little in the way of unnecessary features. At the same time, it retains a level of refinement expected from a Ferrari of its era. The combination of rarity, performance, and historical importance makes the 288 GTO one of the most sought-after models among collectors.

Variants

Ferrari developed the Ferrari 288 GTO Evoluzione as a more extreme version of the standard car, intended for competition use. The Evoluzione is powered by a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V8 producing approximately 659 hp. Combined with a significantly reduced weight of around 940 kg, it delivers performance that remains extraordinary even by modern standards. Only five examples were built. Two remain in Ferrari’s possession, while three are held in private collections. The 288 GTO Evoluzione is widely regarded as the direct precursor to the Ferrari F40, bridging the gap between Group B development and Ferrari’s next generation of hypercars.

Prices

The Ferrari 288 GTO is one of the most valuable and historically significant Ferraris ever produced. Prices typically reach well into the multi-million euro range, depending on condition, provenance, and originality. Recent auction results indicate strong and sustained demand, with exceptional examples achieving increasingly high values, reflecting the model’s importance within Ferrari’s hypercar lineage.
